One study shows that by viewing VR reconstructions of splenic artery aneurysms before endovascular embolization, specialists feel more confident in the consistency of their actions. With VR, specialists can visualize images to explore pathology in detail as well as plan surgeries or other procedures. This can limit their ability to see the full clinical presentation, potentially delaying accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions. Although they can be proficient in understanding X-rays, only a few are able to interpret CT and MRI scans. Accelerating Residency Training For Junior RadiologistsĪs students transition to residency, they bring theoretical knowledge of radiodiagnosis but often lack specialized insights for independent practice. Notably, a study on the applicability of skills acquired through simulation to real-world practice found that practicing CT skills in VR helps students feel more prepared for actual scanning compared to solely observing DICOM files on computers. This encourages students to take an active role in their learning, enhancing engagement and learning motivation. VR offers a transformative alternative, enabling students to observe scans in 3-D, explore slices, change contrasts, label objects and more. In my perspective, this method has drawbacks, as any learning experience should primarily be straightforward and easy to understand for trainees. Although this approach mirrors the typical routine of radiologists, it requires sophisticated spatial vision. Medical students today utilize computer labs for viewing DICOM files, spending most of their time examining studies cross-sectionally.
